Synopsis

The German Aksum Expedition of 1906 and its extensive multi-volume publication of 1913 remain among the most important archaeological undertakings in the Horn of Africa. The series Forschungen zur Archäologie Außereuropäischer Kulturen (Research on the Archaeology of Non-European Cultures) of the German Archaeological Institute has recently opened up additional, often still unknown sources in two volumes to date. On the one hand, the focus has been on the actors and the social and cultural conditions in the former Abyssinia, in the former Colonia Eritrea, and in the Wilhelmine German Empire. The impact on research in the region, which continues to this day, was discussed in equal detail.
The third volume presented here - although without any claim to completeness - brings this project to a close. A total of more than 30 contributions by various authors are devoted to important, newly discovered personal documents of the expedition members, to Ethiopian church history, liturgy, and sacred architecture, as well as to questions of contemporary history and archaeology, which take up important impulses from the work of the expedition. The retrieval of the photographic documentation, which had been lost in the meantime, and the modern approach to documenting the observations in the field now additionally allow the investigation of ethnographic aspects, for example, in the evaluation of images and the processing of ethnographica in the Völkerkunde Berlin and in the estate of Theodor von Lüpke.
The related image files are accessible together with other important documents in a DAE online archive.
