Author Guidelines

New Journal Model

With volume 62 (2021), the Madrider Mitteilungen is now affiliated to the New Journal Model created by DAI Head Office, which includes a redesign of the Madrider Mitteilungen format and simultaneous publication in paper and digital form. The editorial deadline for print-ready manuscripts remains 31 December.

To submit manuscripts for publication, you should use our iDAI.publications portal (https://publications.dainst.org/journals/). First you need to register as an author. Your manuscript will then be evaluated and revised via the portal. Text and images should be submitted to the editor's office in digital format. As an author, you can track the evaluation and editing of your article online at any time.

1. Before making a submission

Before submitting a work, make sure that:

• The self-commitment on the treatment of artefacts not from legal excavations or sources or unknown origin have been followed.
• The research has been approved by the relevant antiquities authorities.
• Usage rights have been obtained for all photos, drawings, repros, aerial photos, etc. Proof of usage rights should be submitted.

Failure to meet these requirements will lead to your submission being rejected.

The German Archaeological Institute recommends that all authors use ORCID, which in Germany is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In addition to providing authors with their own unique identification, ORCID offers many other advantages.

2. Writing your manuscript

Manuscripts must be written in accordance with the publication guidelines and abbreviation lists of the German Archaeological Institute (https://www.dainst.org/65).

The main document, which contains all the guidelines for the preparation of text and footnotes, is the keyword list. This is where all the design and citation guidelines are listed in alphabetical order and illustrated with examples.

Publication in DAI journals and monographs is based on the footnote system. For the Madrider Mitteilungen we ask you to follow the author-year system in your manuscript. The lists of abbreviations contains the abbreviations for journals, series, encyclopaedias and frequently cited works.

Please also note the following points:

• Contributions must be submitted in one of the languages frequently used for the Madrider Mitteilungen (i.e. German, English, Spanish, Portuguese or French).
• Text should not contain any special formatting (e.g. bold, italic, underlined, different font sizes etc.).
• For the new digital edition, for all references in the bibliography, please provide the DAI library system link (https://zenon.dainst.org/) where applicable.
• If the publication cited is available in digital form, you should also provide the relevant link or DOI.
• With regard to numbering, tables are treated like illustrations and must be included in the image numbering system. They should be placed in the text in the relevant place.
• Arrange the different parts of the paper in the following order: English abstract at the start; abbreviations, abstract, list of illustrations, author's contact details, metadata in this order at the end.
• When referring to multiple illustrations in the article, don't use a dash, but list each illustration number individually (e.g. 'Fig. 1, 2, 3', not 'Fig. 1-3'.
• For articles in English, French or Spanish, the singular form 'Fig.' and not 'Figs.' is always used, even when multiple illustrations are cited (e.g. 'Fig. 2, 3, 5').
• In the text, you should state exactly where illustrations are to be placed: ('#place fig. xy here#').
• In the illustration credits, each illustration must be listed on one line; combined entries for illustrations with the same credit are not allowed.
• The subdivision of illustration numbers (e.g. Fig. 4a) is not allowed. Illustrations should be numbered consecutively. Objects displayed together (e.g. different pottery fragments) should be composited as one illustration. Partial labels (e.g. catalogue numbers or subdivisions into a, b, c, etc.) must be added to the file during image processing. The relevant details should be recorded in the notes on image processing.
• As with the dynamic web view, paragraphs in the printed version or static PDF file are numbered to ensure consistent citation. Cross-references should therefore always refer to specific paragraphs and not to pages (e.g. 'cf. § 23').
• In headings, do not use footnotes or (if possible) figure references.
• Summaries and keywords should be in German, Spanish and English.
• All other information can be found in the checklist at the beginning of the submission process.

3. Guidelines for the design of illustration templates

The following applies to digitally submitted artwork intended for printing:

• For greyscale or colour images, only the lossless TIFF (*.tif) or EPS (*.eps) formats should be used. JPGs are not permitted.
• Electronically created vectorised illustrations (Illustrator, AutoCAD etc., not to be confused with bitmap formats, see below) should be submitted as high-resolution exported images (*.tif or *.pdf). Please note that the line width in relation to the final print size must not be less than 0.25 point. In addition, the images should be submitted in the usual original formats (*.eps, *.ai, *.dwg).
• Black and white images should be in greyscale mode (8 bit), colour images in CMYK mode (8 bit, profile FOGRA 27, ISO 12647-7).
• For diagrams, the original data (usually *.xls / *.xlsx) should be submitted together with high-resolution exported images (*.tif or *.pdf).
• The minimum resolution for greyscale and colour images is 400dpi, for bitmap formats (*.bmp, often used for non-vectorised black and white line drawings) 1600dpi. These resolutions apply to the final size in print.
• In addition, for review purposes, we require all illustrations in screen resolution (max. 100dpi) compiled in a single file (PowerPoint, PDF, Word or similar).
• Layout requirements: type area = width 16.5 cm x height 23.0 cm; text column = width 10.8 cm/marginal column = width 5.1 cm; standard image widths, combinable = 5.1 cm; 7.95 cm; 10.8 cm; 16.5 cm; deviations for full-scale illustrations.

4. Submitting your manuscript online

Go to the publication portal website, where you will see the link for the Madrider Mitteilungen. When using the portal for the first time, please register by providing your personal details, a username, email address and password. Remember to register not only as a »reader« but also as an »author«. To do this, tick the appropriate box under »Register as«. After registering, you can log in and submit your manuscript.
