Abstract

The roots of the Lycians, one of the oldest populations in Asia Minor, reach back to the Luwians of the Late Bronze Age. Indigenous Lycian culture was strongly influenced by the Greek culture, but elements of the Anatolian tradition remained in the Lycians’ religious beliefs, burial practices and onomastics until Late Antiquity. Many aspects of Lycian society can therefore only be understood in a regional perspective. In the context of the dissertation (finished in 2020, to be published as part of the series Brill Studies in Greek and Roman Epigraphy in 2023s), three central elements of familial life in the Hellenistic and Roman periods were investigated: marriage, children and inheritance practices. Literary and legal sources are lacking, but numerous inscriptions, in particular funerary texts, provide valuable information.
