Abstract

The article deals with the initial phase of the marking of amphorae in Knidos (chronological group II). The tradition of regularly stamping ceramic transport containers goes back to the last third of the 4th century B.C. (›ship's bow stamp‹, chronological group I). In the first quarter of the 3rd century B.C., the stamps with παράσημος were replaced by individual monograms, ligatures, acronyms and abbreviations. This period lasted up to the 250s or even 240s and includes among others the stamps of the groups Zenon A and B. The stamps of the Zenon group discovered in the area of the Bosporan Kingdom represent completely new combinations between the name abbreviation »ZH« and the emblem »shipʼs bow« (Fig. 4–7) and obviously form a transition phase between chronological groups I and II. In addition, a list of the known connections of the Zenon and Sophanes groups with the abbreviations of the second name is presented.
