Abstract
The projects of the Pergamon Excavation in 2017 concentrated on investigations in the Hellenistic royal city and the surrounding area as part of the current research programme, whose field work was brought to a conclusion. Central to this was geophysical prospecting as well as stratigraphic sondages on the tumulus Yığma Tepe. Alongside proof of a ramp on the northwest side of the tumulus, many other insights were gained into the monument’s structure and manner of construction. A variety of data was obtained about funerary practices in elite burials in Hellenistic Pergamon by the examination of grave inventories from old excavations in Tumuli 2 and 3. To test hypotheses on the development of the settlement on the acropolis of Pergamon, several exploratory excavations were carried out at Building X on the west slope, which indicate that the structure dates to the 1st cent. B.C. The project investigating the Lower Agora was concluded with new findings being made, primarily relating to the imperial-period colonnaded building. The Kane Regional Harbour Survey was also finished; the discovery of imperial-period harbour structures in Pitane (Çandarlı) brought unexpected revelations as to the significance of the site for traffic and trade in the micro-region. Extensive conservation activities focused once more on the gymnasium and the Red Hall.
