Abstract
This paper presents a general overview of the presence and development of coinage in the major mining areas of southern Hispania during the Roman Republican Period. The evidence comprises all hoards and coins, in bronze and silver, found in these regions, and their presence in the same areas from which mineral was extracted and processed is assessed. On the other hand, the paper considers the evidence yielded by the coin series struck by lo- cal mints, including the production, circulation and distribution of these series. Finally, the measures adopted to address conditions of low coin stocks, especially during the 1st century BC, are examined.
