Abstract
Some Phoenician masks show facial contortions usually read as burlesque expressions.
This interpretation has been supported mainly by the mouth grins. But these pieces also show
incisions and other symbolic elements that have received less attention. Taking into account
all of their features, these faces would be revealing various gestures of grief, rage and despair.
If so, they may be symbols of mourning at the death, probably used by priests.
