Abstract
This paper focuses on the settlement evolution in the Cangas de Onís district, on the
northern versant of the European Peaks, from Roman times to the Early Middle Ages. Therefore,
notices furnished by archaeological and inscriptional remains are combined with the
valley ways network and the placenames. Special attention has been made on the recently
recovered remains from roman times in Saint Mary’s Church, Villaverde, which have been
interpreted as belonging to a roman temple, on the questions related to the Christianization
of the surroundings, and on the changes of the settlement patterns.
