Oinoanda, Türkei: Die Arbeiten der Jahre 2012 und 2013

Abstract

The ancient mountain town Oinoanda in northern Lycia has been known since the 19th century as an important epigraphic findspot. The objective of the survey project, initiated in 2007 by the DAI’s Istanbul Department, is to capture the topography of Oinoanda, its buildings and surroundings in a holistic approach and to contextualize it with its rich epigraphic culture. To follow this objective, the map, topography and buildings of the town have been documented again and entered into in a digital system in which the inscription finds were geo-referenced. At the same time, the known fragments of the Diogenes inscription were re-inventoried and three-dimensionally scanned, so that they are now recorded in all details. Thanks to numerous new discoveries, the number of known fragments could be increased by a third to about three hundred. This new stock of Diogenes fragments is now the starting point of an ongoing research project, which provides the virtual assembly and new interpretation of fragments and finally the reconstruction of the Diogenesstoa within the urban fabric of Oinoanda. The project helps to provide a new basis for investigating the relationship between inscription and public space in ancient times.
