Abstract

The following article presents the preliminary results of the research project »The development of German Prehistory as mirrored in the dissertations of the Marburg graduates of the years 1929–1943«. This project was supported by a four-month research grant from the Romano-Germanic-Commission (RGK) of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), in which the dissertations of the first prehistorians who studied under Gero von Merhart (1886–1959) at the Philipps-University Marburg were analysed. The main focus, in terms of the dissertations, was placed on the relationship between the Marburg Prehistory students and graduates and the Romano-Germanic-Commission and its directors Gerhard Bersu (1889–1964) and Ernst Sprockhoff (1892–1967).
