Abstract

The research fellowship of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) Rome included the documentary and scientific processing of about 4300 gemstone and coin replicas. Approximately half of these replicas were loaned to the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at the Goethe University in Frankfurt in 1984. The focus of the work was on the collection in Frankfurt. There were 1846 replicas of coins and 533 replicas of gems, and in Rome, 1530 replicas of gems and 280 replicas of coins. The analyses of the gems indicate a focus on the Imperial Period, and they were mainly copied with plaster. The numismatic objects show a highly chronological and geographical diversity as well as a greater variety of materials for the replicas, reflecting the technical development in the reproduction of coins.
