Eine neue Grabstele eines Veteranen und ehemaligen beneficiarius consularis aus Mainz-Weisenau

Abstract

The completely preserved grave stele of Sextus Iulius Iustus, presented here for the first time, was found in 2013 in the area of the Roman burials along a southeastern arterial road out of the city, near today’s Bettelpfad in Mogontiacum/Mainz. As beneficiarius consularis, the deceased was buried neither in his Gallic hometown nor at his legion’s base, but at the seat of the governor. The inscription shows a number of Roman-Italic features in the monument and its text.
