Die „Grosse Halle” von Karakorum: Zur archäologischen Untersuchung des ersten buddhistischen Tempels der alten mongolischen Hauptstadt

Synopsis
The excavations that have been ongoing in the ancient Mongolian capital of Karakorum since 2000 have fundamentally revised the traditional image of the city and its history. Until 2009, one of the central research projects of the Commission for Archaeology of Non-European Cultures of the German Archaeological Institute concentrated on the investigation of the "Great Hall" located in the south-western corner of the city complex. This columned hall, identified by its first excavator Kiselev in the 1940s as the palace of Ögöödej Chan, can now be conclusively interpreted as a Buddhist temple of the 13th and 14th centuries. After complete uncovering, the remains of a square building with a ground plan divided into seven spaces or bays by eight by eight granite column bases were revealed on an artificially piled podium. The furnishings, the pictorial programme and the floor plan of the hall support the assumption that it must have been a building used for religious purposes. The following publication examines numerous details of the structural development of the "Great Hall" as well as its influence. With Mongolian and English summary.
