Abstract
An inscription found in situ in the area of the Milesian North Market in 1905, has been dated to around the mid 5th century B.C. since its publication by the excavators. This assignment has had far-reaching implications for the historical evaluation of the contents of the text. However, a new analysis of various pieces of evidence pertaining to the dating of this monument suggests an earlier time, namely to the beginning of the Ionian Revolt. The proposed date means that the text refers to a totally different historical context than has previously been assumed.
