Abstract

This paper presents the results of an archaeological excavation from the extensive Roman necropolis in the modern city of Bergama, which contains burials from the Hellenistic and even the Archaic Periods. Three Phrygian fibulae were also discovered, one single and two as a pair. Although they were found individually and without any local context, they provide possible evidence for early burials, now destroyed, from the period of perhaps as early as the 9th century B.C. Two fibulae of identical but inverse workmanship are probably to be regarded as a pair. The single fibula appears to be associated with two elongated objects that may have been used as pendants. The fibulae are rare examples of the pre-Archaic Iron Age at Pergamon and thus shed light on this period, which is little known in Mysia as a whole.
