Abstract

On the Nile Island of Elephantine in southern Egypt, investigations have resumed in the area of the eastern town. These investigations offer the opportunity to trace the early development of the settlement in detail from late prehistory to the Old Kingdom (late 3rd–4th millennium BC). One focus is on a complex from the Early Dynastic Period, which was surrounded by the town’s oldest fortifications. A representative building was later built over, which was partly converted into a workshop for stone vessels in the 3rd Dynasty. The location in front of the temple of Satet also provides new insights into the local cult topography in the Greco-Roman Period.
