Abstract

Examination of a dossier of about 40 recently published military diplomas belonging to soldiers of
Dacian origin who had served in all units of the Roman army provides for a better understanding
of the fate of the indigenous populations of Northern Thrace, Moesia Inferior and Dacia. Corroboration of this type of information through other sources paints a more nuanced picture of recruitment procedures and military service, family life, onomastic concepts within a military milieu and the homecoming of veterans. These new insights unexpectedly enrich our knowledge of the social history of indigenous populations during the imperial period.
