Abstract

A new edition of MAMA IX 13 gives this letter of C. Norbanus Flaccus to Aizanoi (ca. 19–10 BC) a new subject: there is no trace of the asylia of the local Zeus. The context is, instead, the foundation of a new cult. After a correspondence with Augustus and negotiations with the Emperor’s procurator Ofilius Ornatus (?) the city had sent an embassy to the proconsul of Asia to define its financial contribution to an initiative of one of its leading families.

Keywords:

Aizanoi, MAMA IX 13, asylia, Augustus, C. Norbanus Flaccus, Ofilius Ornatus (?), province of Asia, procurator Asiae, procurator Phrygiae, limits of municipal autonomy
