Abstract

Publication of 22 funerary monuments from Amphissa and Myania which date from the archaic to the imperial period. These epitaphs provide new examples of archaic script, in particular the letter san. One of the inscriptions is an epigram which dates probably from the first half of the 3rd century, marking the polyandreion of soldiers who died while defending the «goods of Phoibos». These may have been soldiers whom the city of Amphissa sent in 279 BC to defend the goods belonging to the Delphic Apollo against the invasion of the Galatians.

Keywords:

Western Locris, Amphissa, Myania, funerary inscriptions, archaic script, lettre san, polyandreion for fallen soldiers, defense of Delphi against the Galatian invasion
