Abstract
Around 133 B.C. the Pergamenians celebrated seven gymnasiarchs with decrees that demonstrate their appreciation of the gymnasion as a place where the values of civic identity were cultivated and transmitted. During the critical years of the formation of the Roman province of Asia the political élite of Pergamon looked with special care after the institution that must already have been central to Eumenes’ II concept of enlarging and restructuring the Pergamenian polis.
