Kerameikos
The most important cemetery of ancient Athens is located in the Kerameikos area. The district was also the most important center of Attic pottery production and an area of intensive communication (traders, festive and funeral processions). Evidence of Athenian settlement, cult and sepulchral activity from prehistoric to Byzantine times can be found at this site. The first scientific excavations on the site of the Kerameikos were begun in 1863 by the Greek Archaeological Society. Since 1913, the area has been the subject of systematic excavations by the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute, which is also responsible for the restoration of the monuments. The Kerameikos series presents the results of the excavations with studies of individual monuments and groups of finds.
