Synopsis
Since excavations began at the Kerameikos in Athens, the state necropolis outside the city gates, larger pieces and individual fragments of Panathenaic prize amphorae have been unearthed in the area. This unusual class of Greek vase painting served as an official prize for the winners of the Great Panathenaic Games in honour of the patron goddess Athena. For the first time, this volume deals in detail with the entire collection of approximately 2000 fragments, discusses the numerous contexts in which they were found, and greatly enriches our knowledge of the development of the form and iconography of these vessels.
