Milesische Forschungen

The important ancient trading city of Miletus in Asia Minor is considered the cradle of Greek philosophy and natural sciences. As the founder of over 70 colonies since the early 7th century BC. In the 4th century BC, the city had enormous supra-regional appeal and was considered Ioniae caput, the head of the Ionian landscape.
The excavations at the beginning of the 20th century under the direction of Th. Wiegand systematically uncovered the former port city and brought an ancient city back to light in less than 15 years. While the focus of the research was initially on the magnificent buildings and ruins of both the Hellenistic-Roman and Byzantine and Islamic periods, there was always a particular interest in the archaic heyday, the study of which was specifically targeted, especially in the 1980s.
Since 1999, the Milesischen Forschungen has provided space for comprehensive topics and discussions based on the results of the publication series Milet – Ergebnisse der Ausgrabungen und Untersuchungen seit dem Jahre 1899.
