This volume presents the results of research carried out by scholars from the German Archaeological Institute and international partners over the past decade as part of our joint project Silk Road Fashion. Initially, western China was the main area of study, and all aspects of clothing during the first millennium BCE were the main topics of research. Gradually, other regions of Eurasia with comparable finds and other parts of clothing and equipment came into view. Some of the technical and aesthetic features were recognised as early parts of long traditions, prompting us to extend the timescale to modern fashion.
To make the results easily accessible to speakers of different languages, the papers are presented in English and Chinese. Editorial work was suspended during the pandemic and resumed in autumn 2024. In order not to delay access any further, we will publish each article online as it is completed, so that the entire volume is a 'publication in progress'. Introductory notes by the volume and series editors will be added at the end.
