Original title: Athena am Proteichisma. Zum göttlichen Schutz vor den Stadtmauern
Abstract A boundary stone (I 405) found in situ right at the edge of the section of the moat (τέλμα) that lies before the Dipylon declares the moat to be the property of Athena. The presence of the city’s goddess, and hence also the protection she extended, therefore manifested itself also in this element of Athens’ fortifications which existed from at least ca. 400 BC. Furthermore, the remains of a small antae building in front of the moat could have been a cult site for Athena.
Keywords Kerameikos, Athena, naiskos, proteichisma, telma
