Ausgrabungen in Alt-Paphos auf Cypern
Ancient Old Paphos on Cyprus is primarily known for its supra-regional important sanctuary of Aphrodite. But the site was not only a place of worship, it was also a metropolis with continuous settlement from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Roman Empire. In addition to the history of the city, the archaic-classical north-east gate is also the focus of archaeological research, as the course of the siege of Old Paphos by the Persian army in 498 BC as part of the Ionian Revolt can be reconstructed here with surprising precision. Furthermore, the investigation of the medieval cane sugar processing facilities represents a unique industrial archaeological project for the Mediterranean region and the Middle East, which is characterised by the good preservation and the possibility of systematic research into these facilities. The research history of Old Paphos, which dates back to the 19th century, was characterised by frequent and long interruptions. The excavations in Old Paphos were continued from 1966 under the aegis of the German Archaeological Institute and were provisionally completed in 1995. The excavation findings and finds are published in the series Ausgrabungen in Alt-Paphos.
