Abstract
Taking as starting point the analysis of four letters that Juan Facundo Riaño sent to Emil Hübner between 1878 and 1881, this paper approaches the commissioning of the first plaster casts of sculptures from Olympia for the Museum of Artistic Reproductions in Madrid. In doing so, Hübner is portrayed as facilitator in the acquisition of pieces for an institution which was crucial, at the end of the 19th century, both for the study and dissemination of ancient history and archaeology, as well as to foster Spanish-German academic and cultural relations.
