Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between the main trends in Early Empire gold and silver coinage and the evolution of their metal supply. To this end four independent sources of information are analysed including the composition of coin finds, the gold/silver mint ratio, the metal traces of coined gold and silver and the natural archives of ancient pollution. The paper concludes with a comprehensive interpretation of the main episodes of gold and silver coinage in the Early Empire. The paper is published in its original version written in 2013.
