Abstract

After the collapse of the western parodos in the Odeon early in 2012 an anastylosis of the arch was carried out that revealed multiple results indicating the main building phases in this area of the Gymnasium. Hellenistic stonemason’s marks on the ashlars show the re-use of Hellenistic stone material in the Roman building. The distinctiveness of this construction results from the usage of a rising arch, probably formerly to vault a staircase in this entrance. The intersection with the adjacent circular vault, supporting the cavea, even enhances this geometrical shaping, which attests the high skills of Pergamene craftsmen in the Roman imperial era.
