Abstract

Until now Byzantine Priene and surroundings had been accorded little economical and political importance. Recent analysis of two middle Byzantine written sources which so far has not been considered as relevant for the region indicates that during the early 10th century Priene had been an important military base. Furthermore during the 10th/11th century a monastic center had steadily gained influence in the vicinity of Priene.
