Abstract

The paper examines the historical background of an epigram that is preserved in the Anthologia Palatina (XV 2) and celebrates the construction of city walls in the Lycian city of Myra by Emperor Marcian (450–457). On the one hand, the poem is subjected to a detailed stylistic analysis, while on the other hand, both the Emperor’ s personal connection to Lycia and the functions of the other persons mentioned in the epigram are examined in detail. Finally, the construction of the wall is set in its historical context and the possible reasons for such a project are canvassed.
