Resafa

Resafa-Sergiupolis in northern Syria was considered an important pilgrimage city from the 4th century AD and was later the caliph's residence of the Umayyad dynasty under the name Rusafat Hisham. Their monumental buildings and rich archaeological evidence are of great interest for research into the coexistence and transitions between Christian and Islamic culture. Due to its well-preserved monuments and the high level of Byzantine architecture, Resafa is one of the most important ruins of the early Byzantine period.
Resafa has been the subject of archaeological research since the early 1950s. In addition to dealing with scientific questions, the problem of preserving and restoring the building structure is also part of the activities of the German Archaeological Institute in Resafa. The excavation results with studies of individual monuments and groups of finds are published in the Resafa series.
