Tiryns

Along with Mycenae, Thebes and Pylos, Tiryns is one of the most important palace centers of the Mycenaean culture on the Greek mainland. The settlement site around and on a rocky ridge is one of the few places in Greece where both the ups and downs of cycles of emergence and decay of social complexity as well as the changes in architectural manifestations of political power can be studied in an exemplary and long-term perspective. The investigations aim to document and interpret the diachronic course of the use of the rock of Tiryns and its surroundings between the first settlement in the 6th millennium BC. BC and the Byzantine period, with emphasis on the Mycenaean period.
After the first excavations in Tiryns, initiated by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, were completed at the end of the 1920s, excavation work was resumed by the German Archaeological Institute in 1967. The publication of these excavation results with comprehensive studies of individual monuments and groups of finds takes place in the Tiryns series.
