Samos
On the island of Samos, just off the west coast of Asia Minor, two sites in particular attract archaeological attention. Firstly, here is the ancient city of the same name, Samos, with its heyday in the Archaic period and the aqueduct of the Eupalinos from the 6th century BC. BC as a masterpiece of ancient engineering.
On the other hand, the nationally important sanctuary of the goddess Hera is located near the ancient city of Samos.
The cult area, with its traces of settlement that go back to the early Bronze Age, is an extremely rich site for evidence of the beginnings and first monumental development of Ionian architecture and sculpture. There are also numerous finds made of bronze and ivory as well as wooden carvings, which have been preserved in the swampy area of the sanctuary in a way that is almost unique for Greece and reflect the international relationships of the sanctuary.
The results of the excavations carried out on the island by the German Archaeological Institute since 1925 are presented in the Samos series.
