Skulpturen von Caesarea Mauretaniae

The series Skulpturen von Caesarea Mauretaniae documents – in four catalog volumes with a planned final fifth volume – the approximately 400 sculptures in modern Cherchel, the former Caesarea that was the capital of the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis on the Mediterranean coast of present-day Algeria from 40 A.D. The series deals with Roman ideal sculpture as part of an independent Roman sculpture, thus contradicting a research tradition that sees Roman sculptures primarily as copies of Greek art. The cohesive and rich context of the sculptures of Caesarea Mauretaniae with copies, portraits and unique individual works provides the basis for investigations into the origin and consistency of Roman art. The project, which began in 1982, includes an inventory of the objects at Cherchel, a detailed examination of the individual statues, and a detailed examination of them.
