Synopsis

The main intention of this book is to demonstrate that, during the Roman Empire, portraits of non-imperial citizens were duplicated in the same way as portraits of emperors. This applies not only to portraits of high-status individuals, but to ordinary citizens as well. Women are depicted as frequently as men, and there are even portraits of children. These latter portraits are to be found especially in graves.

Keywords:

Portraits, emperors, ancient sculpture, funerary sculpture, representation
