Synopsis

Since 1955, extensive research has been conducted in Manching, playing a pivotal role in establishing this large settlement – and later oppidum – as one of the most thoroughly studied sites in La Tène archaeology. However, the influence Manching exerted on its surrounding region, as well as the significance of the hinterland for Manching itself, has remained largely unexplored. This volume addresses these questions, with the study area largely corresponding to the Ingolstadt Basin. The findings and features of La Tène-period settlement sites are comprehensively presented here, with graves further enriching the settlement record. A total of 36 burial sites outside Manching were documented, distributed across 14 locations.

After classifying settlement types, the collected data was integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS). This analysis examines factors influencing site selection and includes advanced calculations on land use, particularly concerning economic catchment areas and yields. Population estimates ultimately provide insights into whether surplus production was feasible in these settlements and whether it could be sustained by the agricultural workforce. It can be assumed that, in addition to economic self-sufficiency, rural settlements had to generate surplus to support potential central places—especially Manching.

Another key focus is exploring processes of centralization, the role of central places, and potential hierarchies and dependencies within the settlement landscape.
