Abstract
A building layer stratigraphically older than the previously known kārum-period building provides important clues to the early development in Boğazköy in the northern lower city. Following use of the area in the kārum era, which extends without apparent interruption into the Hittite period, a large traffic area is left open on the inner side of the city gate of the northern lower city, facilitating access to the settlement. Excavations in the center and east of the terrace provide evidence of intensive use in the Hittite period, but this does not extend into the more recent Great Kingdom period. The complexity of the Roman features not only provides an insight into the history of this period, but also allows conclusions to be drawn about the relationship between Roman and local trajectories.
