Abstract
The dating and route of the so-called Sacred Way at Didyma during the pre-Hellenistic period has long been a source of controversy. This article begins with an introductory overview of the archaeological remains of the oldest level of the street, labelled Street V, as documented during excavations. The evidence from two deep soundings in the north-western section of the street route is presented in detail. The pottery recovered here from underneath the oldest street paving provides a terminus post quem that dates the oldest phase of the street to the Archaic period and attests to the existence of a road in the area of the Sacred Way as early as the pre-Hellenistic period.
