Das Kabirenheiligtum bei Theben

The publications in the series Das Kabirenheiligtum bei Theben are dedicated to this comparatively unknown cult site in ancient Boeotia, whose use dates back to the late 10th century BC. The cult area was structurally developed from the 6th century to the 4th century BC and was the site of a mystery cult for deities known as Kabirs. The first exploration of the sanctuary took place in 1887 in an emergency excavation, which sought to preserve the finds from looters and the art trade. Further excavation campaigns were carried out from 1956 to 1969 with the aim of clarifying questions about the stratigraphy and determining the boundaries of the cult district. In addition, a deep excavation for prehistoric layers served to investigate the continuity of use. The aim of the publications is to bring together the scattered information from the repeatedly interrupted research activities into an overall picture and to publish previously unpublished material.
