Das römische Herrscherbild
The publications in the series Das römische Herrscherbild aim to document and depict every surviving, accessible and meaningful portrait of a Roman ruler. The indexing of the monuments with the help of a catalog serves as a basis for answering questions about the history of transmission and reception.
The series is divided into several sections:
Section I: Iconography of the members of the Iulian-Claudian family
Section II: Iconography of the emperors of the Middle Imperial Period
Section III: Iconography of the emperors of the later Imperial Period
As the series Das römische Herrscherbild was conceived in the late 1930s, current research questions at the time, which were strongly guided by the search for the true appearance of the Roman emperors, are reflected above all in the older volumes of the series. The publications in Section I deal with the primary problems of identifying and dating the portraits, taking particular account of the large amount of literature and the wealth of different research opinions in this field. The main concern of the newer volumes of Department I in particular is the constitution of portrait types of the portraits - as a measure for the ordering of the surviving monuments and for the approximation of lost models - as well as the replica review, which provides insights into the history of reception with reference to chronological and geographical distribution and in which the different reception behavior of individual workshops and entire art provinces becomes recognizable.
The volumes of Section II and III are almost complete.
