The Archaeological Map of the Sudan

The series was conceived and established in the 1970s by the architect Friedrich W. Hinkel, who worked for decades on cultural heritage preservation in Sudan. The aim of the series is to register the archaeological sites in Sudan from the Palaeolithic to the early modern period as comprehensively as possible and to present them in the form of a handbook with descriptions and references. This is done in geographical order and on a cartographic basis. A data repository will be established which will serve as a basis for in-depth research in north-east Africa. Three of the planned 10 fascicles have been published (1977: A Guide to the Principles of the Archaeological Map of the Sudan; 1979: South Libyan Desert; 1992: Red Sea Coast). The concept of the series is complemented by supplement volumes for monographic studies of individual monuments or overarching themes. Five supplements have been published, including on the Sun Temple M 250 in Meroë and on objects in the National Museum Khartoum.

The series was first published from 1977 by the Zentralinstitut für Alte Geschichte und Archäologie (ZIAGA) of the Akademie der Wissenschaften of the GDR, the volumes were published by Akademie-Verlag. Since 2002, F. W. Hinkel continued the series in his own publishing house Monumenta Sudanica. With the transfer of F. W. Hinkel's scientific estate to the DAI in 2009, the Institute took over the editorship of the series.
