Synopsis
Between 1875 and 1881, a total of six excavation campaigns uncovered the central area of the important Panhellenic sanctuary, the Altis, as well as several adjacent areas. The architects and archaeologists kept diaries, compiled inventories of the finds, drew plans and objects, wrote reports to the High Commission in Berlin, which was in charge of the excavations, and introduced photography as a new method of documentation. Even though the results of the so-called Old Excavation were already made public in reports during the ongoing work and presented in a monumental publication between 1890 and 1897, the handwritten documentation produced on site, especially the diaries and reports, is of great importance to science. The handwritten texts, some of which were written in Kurrent and some in a more modern cursive script, are now being gradually transcribed.
