Synopsis

The archaeological investigations of the Basilica Julia on the Roman Forum in Rome have yielded new findings on the history of the building and its use, the reconstruction, function and significance of the monumental structure. The analysis of the architectural findings has identified eight construction phases spanning a period from 500 BC to late antiquity. These can be divided into five main phases and three smaller reconstructions. In the era of Caesar, a new edifice was constructed in the form of a three-storey pillar basilica with five naves. Like the Basilica Aemilia opposite it, the Basilica Julia served as a financial, court, and assembly building until the late 7th century. Their combination of utility and luxury contributed to the establishment of binding models in the Roman world.
