Synopsis
The northeastern region of Petén possessed special conditions for cultural, political and architectural development during the pre-Hispanic Maya period. Practically the entire northeastern quadrant was in productive activity for 1200 years (300 BC - 900 AD). In this area lies Tikal, the powerful major city of the central Maya lowlands. Tikal is undoubtedly the best-known and best-researched Maya city in Guatemala. But Tikal alone, without sites like Nakum, Yaxhá, El Zotz, Uaxactún, Xultú and many others, could not have functioned as the head of a regional system. All parts of the whole, with large and small urban centres, were important in producing a very special and spectacular world-class local culture.
The book is divided into four parts. After an overview explaining the background and working methodology, the field dataset is presented. The catalogue contains newly collected records for 64 Maya cities, 28 of which are recorded for the first time. The new corpus is presented descriptively and graphically site by site.
The information on the individual sites is then summarised and grouped in tables designed in the same way to ensure meaningful comparability of the data. Also important is the overview map of the region in which the 128 archaeological sites recorded so far have been included.
