Der Osthafen von Selinunt

Zwischenbericht zu den Feldforschungen im Tal des Gorgo Cotone 2019–2021

Abstract

Since 2019, investigations have been taking place conducted in the Gorgo Cotone valley between the ancient city area and the eastern hill of Selinunte. Since the 18^th/19^th centuries it has been suspected, on the strength of various arguments, that the ancient eastern harbour of the Greek city was here sited. It was presumed presumed to have been completely silted up. Through archaeological and pedological field investigations, the initial phase of the project confirmed the former existence of a harbour zone. Moreover, various insights were gained into its infrastructure and connection to the city and its immediate outskirts. Notable discoveries include an Archaic storage building, a water supply system, and a Classical road network in the northern part of the former bay, while the remains of Hellenistic ramps for ships were recognised in the west.
