Abstract
The Campiglia d’Orcia Marri and Venturi hoards represent two cornerstones in the periodization systems of the EBA of Central Italy. To date, however, no organised publication existed for these two central assemblages of bronzes, and for a third group of axes and ingots known as “Acquisto Marri 1924” (probably part of the hoard of that name). This study has allowed the systematic review of the bronzework from a wide area between Cecina and Fiora and, inland, up to Mount Amiata and the Val d’Elsa: this region comprises the metallurgical Scoglietto-Montemerano facies as defined by Renato Peroni in 1996. In his opinion, this was a subjective classification, prompted by its partial spatial overlap with some ceramic groups of the Sienese and Grosseto provinces. A revision of the axe sequence is now presented that, while confirming the broad basis of previous studies, has produced a more coherent articulation of the sequence, achieved by a better definition of the characteristics of the artefacts and a global revision of the existing typologies.
