Lacus Albanus. Identificati gli scavi Schliemann

Abstract

From the beginnings of the 20th century it was believed that the brief excavation work which Schliemann conducted on Monte Crescenzio (Marino), looking for the origins of Rome, was sited well away from the Albano crater lake, close to the Marrana di San Bonaventura. New archive research combined with aerial topographic surveys demonstrate that the suggestions made by Michele Stefano de Rossi were correct. On top of the hill was an extensive necropolis (Late Bronze – mature Iron Age) which constituted – taken together with the Riserva del Truglio, Pascolare and the cemeteries of San Sebastiano and Le Mole – a dense accumulation of tombs all around Castel Gandolfo. The multidisciplinary 2022 explorations by our team have shed new light on the stratigraphy of the Vigna Meluzzi (the so-called Pompei Albana).
