The Iron Age Occupation of Lisbon

Abstract

During the last decade, archeological fieldwork that took place in the urban area of
Lisbon (Portugal) unveiled new data related to its pre-roman occupation. The foundation of
this settlement, that dates back to the late 8th/early 7th century BC, seems to be closely related
with the Phoenician expansion in the Far West. In fact, the oriental influences will characterize
several aspects of the material culture of the Tagus estuary during the 1st millennium BC.
This paper intends to gather and analyzed the scattered information resulting from the
multiple urban excavations, and to present a framework of the evolution of the ancient Olisipo
during the Iron Age.
