1Mit dem vorliegenden Band 72 der ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ erlebt unsere Zeitschrift ein neues Zeitalter mit gedruckter und digitaler Ausgabe in einem aktuellen Layout. Das zugrundeliegende Publikationsmodell, das von der Redaktion der Zentrale des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts entwickelt wurde, hat die Abteilung Istanbul gerne und dankbar übernommen. Dieser wichtige Schritt ist zugleich Anlass, kurz auf die Geschichte unserer Zeitschrift zurückzublicken.

2Nach Gründung der Abteilung Istanbul des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts 1929 erschien 1933 die erste Ausgabe der ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, die zunächst nicht als Zeitschrift, sondern als Reihe von Sammelschriften einzelner Autoren, von monographischen Studien mit Beiträgen mehrerer Autoren oder als Quellenedition konzipiert war. Dementsprechend erschienen die ersten fünf Bände bis 1942 eher unregelmäßig. Thematisch decken sie die Prähistorie, Vorderasiatische und Klassische Archäologie sowie Orientalistik und Islamische Kunstgeschichte ab, wobei die Orientalistik mit vier Bänden klar überwog. Erst mit der Wiedereröffnung der Abteilung 1954 nach kriegsbedingter Schließung erscheinen die ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ seit 1955 jährlich als Zeitschrift mit Aufsätzen aus dem gesamten Arbeitsgebiet der Abteilung. Der damalige Direktor Kurt Bittel bemerkte in seinem Vorwort zum sechsten Band der ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, dass damit die Abteilung endlich eine Form der Mitteilungen geschaffen habe »wie sie die Institute in Rom und Athen seit langem ähnlich besitzen«.

3Diesem Konzept sind die ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ bis heute treu geblieben. Die Zeitschrift gehört weiterhin zu den international führenden Plattformen für die archäologische und kulturhistorische Forschung zu Anatolien und seinen Nachbarregionen. Dem fachlichen Spektrum der Abteilung Istanbul entsprechend bilden Beiträge aus der Prähistorischen, der Vorderasiatischen, der Klassischen und der Byzantinischen Archäologie sowie der Bauforschung weiterhin den Schwerpunkte der Zeitschrift. Zuletzt haben interdisziplinäre Aufsätze unter Einbeziehung weiterer Geistes-, Natur- oder Geowissenschaften jedoch stark an Bedeutung gewonnen. Ebenso erwünscht sind Beiträge internationaler Autorenkollektive, die die Vielfalt der archäologischen Forschung in beziehungsweise über die Türkei widerspiegeln.

4Mit dem neuen Band der ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ stehen alle Artikel vom Moment des Erscheinens neben dem gedruckten Buch in zwei weiteren Ausgabemedien kostenfrei zur Verfügung: In Form eines PDF-Dokuments zum Download und online in einem responsiven Viewer Format (https://publications.dainst.org/journals/), das mit den Datenbanken der iDAI.world (https://idai.world/), wie Arachne (iDAI.objects), Zenon (iDAI.bibliography) oder dem Geoserver (iDAI.gazetteer) vernetzt ist. Das Viewer-Format ist klar in Textkolumnen, Anmerkungen und Abbildungen strukturiert, die in Spalten nebeneinander laufen, so dass alle Inhalte sichtbar sind, ohne dass die Textebene verlassen werden muss. Der Viewer funktioniert auf PCs genauso wie auf Tablets und Smartphones. In der Online-Version besteht zudem die Möglichkeit, zusätzliche, nicht gedruckte oder auch nicht druckbare Anhänge wie etwa Forschungsdatenbanken oder 3D-Modelle zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Inhalte können so klar strukturiert vorgelegt und bereichert um zusätzliche Materialien und Recherche-Möglichkeiten erschlossen werden. Alle relevanten Angaben für eine wissenschaftliche Zitation sind vorhanden, die Online-Version hat zudem zitierfähige Absatznummerierungen. Die Autorenschaft ist auch mit Identifikatoren wie OCRID- oder ROR-IDs möglich und die wissenschaftliche Verbreitung durch DOIs quantifizierbar.

5Wir hoffen, mit diesen zeitgemäßen Innovationen neue Autorinnen und Autoren für die ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ zu gewinnen und zugleich auch weltweit einen größeren Leserkreis zu erreichen. Auf diese Weise soll der internationale wissenschaftliche Austausch über Archäologie und Geschichte Anatoliens und seiner Nachbarregionen bestmöglich gefördert werden.

6Volume 72 of ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ marks the beginning of a new era for our journal with printed and digital editions in a modern new layout. We consider the adoption of this publication model developed by the editorial staff at the Head Office of the German Archaeological Institute, and for which we are indebted to our colleagues in Berlin, as an innovative and timely step, it giving us occasion to look back, albeit briefly, on the long history of our journal.

7The first issue of ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ appeared in 1933, just a few years after the founding Istanbul Department in 1929. Initially, the publication was not conceived as a journal, but rather as a series of collected volumes by individual authors, as monographs with contributions by several authors, or as source editions. Accordingly, the first five volumes appeared rather irregularly until 1942. Thematically, they covered prehistory, Near Eastern and Classical Archaeology as well as Oriental Studies and Islamic Art History, with Oriental Studies clearly the most numerous with four volumes. It was not until the reopening of the department in 1954, following its closure due to the war, that ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ began to appear annually from 1955 as a journal with articles from the entire research spectrum as covered by the department. In his preface to the sixth volume of the ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, the director at the time, Kurt Bittel, stated that the department had thus finally created a form of communication »similar to that which the institutes in Rome and Athens have had for a long time«.

8Since this time, ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ have stayed true to this concept. The journal continues to be one of the leading international platforms for archaeological and cultural-historical research on Anatolia and its neighbouring geographical regions. In keeping with the specialist spectrum of the Istanbul Department, contributions from prehistoric, Near Eastern, Classical and Byzantine archaeology as well as building research continue to form the main focus of the journal. More recently, however, interdisciplinary essays featuring contributions from other disciplines of the humanities, natural sciences and geosciences have gained in importance. Contributions by international author collectives that reflect the diversity of archaeological research in or about Turkey are also welcome.

9With the new volume of ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, all articles are now available free of charge from the moment of publication. In addition to the printed book, two other output media are available: first in the form of a PDF document for download, and second as an online edition presented in a responsive viewer format (https://publications.dainst.org/journals/) linked to the databases of iDAI.world (https://idai.world/), such as Arachne (iDAI.objects), Zenon (iDAI.bibliography) or Geoserver (iDAI.gazetteer). The viewer format is clearly structured in text columns, annotations and illustrations that run side by side in columns, thus making all content visible without having to leave the text level. The viewer works on computers as well as on tablets and smartphones. In the online version, it is also possible to integrate additional, non-printed or even non-printable attachments, such as research databases or 3D models. This means that scientific content can be presented in a clearly structured way and enriched with additional materials and research possibilities. All relevant information for a scientific citation is available, and the online version also features citable paragraph numbering. Authorship is also possible with identifiers such as OCRID or ROR IDs, and scholarly dissemination is quantifiable through DOIs.

10We hope that these contemporary innovations will attract new authors to ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ and at the same time allow us to reach an even wider readership worldwide. We think that you will agree that this step will help us to promote international scholarly exchange on the archaeology and history of Anatolia and its neighbouring regions in the best possible way.

11›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ dergisi, 72. sayısının basılı ve elektronik yayını ile yeni görünümü sayesinde yepyeni bir döneme giriyor. Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü´nün genel merkezindeki redaksiyon birimi tarafından geliştirilen, yayına yönelik bu ana model, İstanbul Şubesi tarafından memnuniyetle benimsenmiştir. Bu önemli adım, dergimizin tarihine burada kısa bir göz atma fırsatı da sunmaktadır.

12Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü İstanbul şubesinin 1929 yılında kurulmasıyla 1933 yılında ilk sayısı yayımlanan ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, o zamanlar çeşitli yazarlara ait makalelerinin derlendiği bir seri, çok yazarlı monografi ya da tıpkıbasım olarak tasarlanmıştır. Bu nedenle, 1942 yılına dek, derginin ilk beş sayısı düzensiz aralıklarla yayımlanmıştır. Prehistorya, Yakın Doğu arkeolojisi, klasik arkeoloji ve İslam sanatını konu alan derginin ilk dört sayısında Yakın Doğu araştırmalarına daha fazla yer verilmiştir. Savaş nedeniyle kapanan şubenin 1954 yılında yeniden açılmasıyla, ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹ 1955 yılından itibaren içinde şubenin araştırma konularından tüm makalelerin yer aldığı yıllık bir dergi halini alır. O dönemin müdürü Kurt Bittel, derginin 6. sayısındaki önsözünde »uzun zamandır Roma ve Atina şubelerinde olduğu gibi« İstanbul şubesinin de nihayet bir bildiri biçimi yarattığını yazmaktadır.

13›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹in bu biçimine günümüze dek sadık kalınmıştır. Dergi, aynı zamanda Anadolu ve çevresiyle ilgili arkeoloji ve sanat tarihi araştırmalarında, uluslararası nitelikteki başlıca platformlardan biridir. İstanbul şubesinin bilimsel yelpazesine uygun olarak prehistorya, Yakın Doğu arkeolojisi, klasik arkeoloji ve Bizans arkeolojisi ile mimarlık tarihi araştırmaları, derginin hâlâ ağırlıklı konularıdır. Diğer yandan, sosyal bilimlerin diğer dalları ile fen ve yer bilimleriyle birlikte disiplinlerarası makaleler de son derece önem kazanmıştır. Ancak, dergide, Türkiye´deki arkeolojik araştırmaların çeşitliliğini yansıtan, farklı uluslardan yazarların ortaklaşa hazırladığı makalelerin de yer almasını arzu ediyoruz.

14›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹, yeni sayısıyla birlikte basılı kitap yanı sıra artık elektronik yayın olarak da iki formatta ücretsiz erişime açılacaktır: Kaydedilebilir PDF belgesi, aynı zamanda Arachne (iDAI.objects), Zenon (iDAI.bibliography) ve Geoserver (iDAI.gazetteer) gibi iDAI.world´ün (https://idai.world/) veritabanlarıyla da bağlantılı duyarlı bir görüntüleyici yardımıyla (https://publications.dainst.org/journals/) çevrimiçi görüntülenebilir. Bu formatta yazı metni, dipnot ve resimler yan yana sütunlar halinde yapılandırılmıştır ve böylelikle içeriğin tümü yazı katmanını kapatmadan görünebilir. Görüntüleyici, tablet ve akıllı telefonla olduğu gibi bilgisayarla da uyumludur. Bu çevrimiçi versiyonla, bilimsel veritabanı ya da üç boyutlu model gibi basılamayan ya da basımı mümkün olmayan ekler de sunulabilmektedir. 15Bu modern yeniliklerle, ›Istanbuler Mitteilungen‹e yeni yazarlar kazandırmayı ve aynı zamanda daha dünya çapında daha fazla okuyucuya ulaşmayı umuyoruz. Bu yolla, Anadolu ve çevresinin tarihi ve arkeolojisi ile ilgili uluslararası düzeyde bir bilimsel fikir alış verişine en iyi biçimde katkı sağlanmış olacaktır.
